162 bottles were hung with 162 notes inside. A participant would enter the room and take the knife hanging on the wall to cut one of the 162 strings, dropping a bottle and shattering (generally) it on the floor. If the bottle was not broken it would be handed to the participant to dash against the wall. Upon successful breaking I would rifle through the shards and pull out the participant’s fortune, silently handing it to them.

Sacred & Profane happens every year at Battery Steel on Peaks Island in Portland, Maine. It is an amazing event that arises out of the community with no fees, no paperwork, no contracts, no applications, no advertising, no marketing, and no shit. An increasingly rare breed of pure events with no commercial or bureaucratic concerns. It makes me fall in love with Portland even more all over again. I am honored to have been a part this year.
More thorough commentary when I can muster it.

A general info dump, since I haven’t had a chance to trickle this out, and likely will not until everything is upon me:
The Dinner Table is wrapping up and should be available Friday (May 22nd) through it’s own site, NaDA Publishing, or its MagCloud Page.
Tuesday May 26th, I will be outbound to Johannesburg, South Africa. Staying over a night there, and then on to Llongwe, Malawi. I will be traveling over there for the entire month of June, landing stateside (according to plan) July 1st. I will attempt to keep this site saturated with photos and stories for the duration.
I of course will be away, but MENSK will continue on with TruckShows and RoofTop Films for the month of June.
I also have two shows coming up before I jet off next Tuesday. First up, at Space on Sunday the 24th: Hatreds (our new untested black metal duo), with A Primitive and Savage Land (thinking man’s power violence), and Book of the Dead (polite man’s death metal).
Then Monday the 25th at Bubba’s Sulky Lounge: Ye! With Rattlesnakes, and Shellshag (wonderful rock n’ roll garbage) from Brooklyn. Should be a fantastic show. If you are intercepting this transmission anywhere near Portland, ME, you should come check out the twitching carnage.
Until the future.

You have been watching Earth Day. My first outing as Mensk’s new executive director. The Portland Phoenix had this to say about the event (and myself):
Under the new leadership of young buck Andrew Lyman, MENSK busts out its 10th EARTH DAY CELEBRATION today in Portland’s Congress Square, with vendors, musicians, artists, and more on hand. Entry to the event is a piece of litter, and the more you bring, the more goodies you’ll get. Check out the non-profit’s handsome new Web site at menskmaine.org.
In total honesty, it was an underwhelming event. A hard event to start with. It was the original MENSK event, in its tenth year. We are going through some serious restructuring, and no one’s heart felt in it. I didn’t know what was required or expected of me, and it turns out very little. The day has its own momentum. People arrive, set themselves up, generally know the routine, and sit and schmooze for a few hours. I felt entirely superfluous, and a little like a ball had been dropped somewhere. Do you come into an organization and breathe new life into what they already have established, or do you find your own passion in it, and make it something new. Ideally a little bit of both, but I feel that I failed to breathe that new life into today’s event. Being a such a young buck, it’s hard to come to terms with the full reality of my situation. There is only possibilities with this group. I feel stifled by the history and good intentions of the people who have already been working for years on this project. I need to realize that perhaps the reason I was asked to step up and do this in the first place was that they thought I could bring some new energy to this organization. The future is the only thing on the horizon. I’m ready to meet it head on. …for historical accuracy I should point out that everyone who participated was very happy with this failure I’ve just described.

A stunning triumph for the West End of Portland Maine. Making the score 1 to 1. Thanks to everyone for playing.

The glow of the outdoors has begun to beckon once again, which means the time has come to blow the dust off of our legs and fish old rivalries out of winter storage. Come support your side of town. The West End has to make up for the humiliating defeat it was dealt by the East and their superior 13 year old line of defenders.
Sunday April 19. Meet @ Monument Square for te hurling of insults, the explanation of the rules, the distribution of flags and the commencement of official play.

Recently I completed a site for the newly re-established Maine Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts or MEVLA for short.
MEVLA is a group providing legal services and aid to individuals and groups working with the arts in Maine. Intellectual property law, contact negotiations, mediation services, etc. They look like they are poised to quickly establish themselves as a prominent fixture in Maine’s cultural landscape. I am happy to have had the opportunity to do some work for them in their early days. For full disclosure I probably only got the job because I met the founder when I moved into his old apartment.

Last night I was elected/ hired as executive director of a non-profit group here in Portland called MENSK. From what I understand from my friends that work for non-profits, this means that I will work for slave wages, with little hope of thanks or recognition, for causes that are repeatedly and increasingly neglected. Should be an absolute blast!
MENSK is a hub. We aim to provide a set of utilities and resources for artists and organizers to get their projects, events, organizations off the ground. MENSK is a negative space. It is an umbrella organization and it’s primary aim is to support and nurture burgeoning bright ideas. We also have a proud history and promising future of events organization and community building.
I have absolutely no idea what I am in for at this point, but I aim to learn as I go along. It’s all we can ever do. The second you really get a handle on something I believe you should quit, it indicates that you’re done learning.

The Mission of Burma Interview from last month is alive and kicking. Check out the Space Blog and read on young adventurer. Burma has long been of of my favorite bands. It was a pleasure to get to meet them.
AL: At what point did that terror fade where you were thought, “alright, maybe we have a chance at not sucking.”
CC: I guess after the first round of gigs. They went really well.
PP: And also after a year or two when we got a concentrated batch of shows, at the end of it, it was actually like a machine, and like you’re supposed to feel in a band.
