Flyers From Another Planet, will ask hundreds of artists (and good plain folk) from all over existence to create original and visionary flyers for shows, events, bands, and lost dogs that don’t exist.

The gallery space of The Tan will be filled with 9″ diameter utility poles floor to (11ft) ceiling. The poles will get covered in flyers and guests will wander the weird forest marveling at the many world(s) that could be.
And we want YOU! Send us a flyer from your dreams: bands from an alien world, the party you’ve always wanted to throw, the community announcement from Hell. . . There are absolutely NO restrictions on form, content, or materials. Make the coolest flyer you’ve never seen!

If you would like to submit a flyer, please do. Mail flyers to:
the Tan
1415 4th St SW
Albuquerque, NM 87104

The Meow Wolf Due Return is just about ready to set sail this week. The long awaited opening will be the Friday, June 13th at 5 at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe, NM. This is one of the most impressive installations I’ve ever seen and I am honored to have been involved (in however small a capacity). We’ve been building, wiring, gluing, painting, hauling, and sawing for almost two months now. Come explore another world right here on our own. Show will be up through July 10.
For those who weren’t there, the opening was a smash. We were pretty much packed to the gills till midnight. I suppose that’s what you get when you have 31 artists included in a show. 31 artists with roughly 31 pieces each, so over 900 pieces of art in that space. It was a glowing evening of good-vibes and vibrant colors.

If you’d like to see more of the show check out Bethany DeLahunt’s photos here: You Are So Great. Bethany was also a participant in the show (she did the Failed Calendar which did well to cheer up those who were down on themselves from not getting their shit together).

A Full list of participants (in absolutely no order) is as follows so they can google themselves and have this (at least) show up: Ali Pate, Lauren Kostelnick. Andrew Lyman, Sarah Skenazy, Martha McGinnis, Ben Wood, Bradford Erickson, Bethany DeLahunt. David Cudney, Avery Kapala, Eva Avenue. Liza Bley. Andy Keane, Reina Patrick, Janice Kostelnick, Maggie Siebert, Robin McClannahan, Seth Matlick, Shantal DuBois, Alex Martin, Sofia Eleftheriou, Stacey Heim, John Abbott, Ivy Anna Costello, Stephanie Galloway, Eli Wentzel-Fisher, Justine Maldonado, Jenny Hipscher, Rich Kaplan, Chris Molla, and Jessica Hayden.

Thanks everyone. Hope to see you and more next year.

This is not my project, but I am going to be helping out with a little bit of the programming and soldering for some of the elements in it. The folks with the art collective Meow Wolf up in Santa Fe are putting this together for the CCA in May and it threatens to be extravagant.

In their words:
*YOUR DONATION THROUGH KICKSTARTER WILL BUILD THE SHIP*
*The ship is 70ft. long, 25ft. wide, and 14ft. high. Your donation gives us the lumber to build it.*

An inter-dimensional ship has settled on an alien landscape. Once a seafaring vessel, it now bares the marks of its previous voyages; a hodge-podge of transport devices and retro-fitted technologies.

The ship’s interior speaks of the rich history of the ship and its passengers, a history that is discoverable through a vast fictional archive presented throughout the ship.

The foreign environment that the ship resides in is filled with alien flora, fauna, and fungi; glowing trees that interact with audience members, cliff dwellings sprouting mysterious fruits, and creatures that sing alien tunes.

This project will incorporate video, live performance and extensive interactive elements to submerge the audience into a fully-operating fictional world.

Designed and directed by Meow Wolf, the installation will be a collaboration with over 100 artists, including national and international artists. Meow Wolf expects this project to garner attention from leading art publications when it opens in May of 2011.

The challenge starts today! What is your thing-a-day for Fun-A-Day? E-mail us at funadayabq@gmail.com if you’ve got any last-minute questions or ideas. See you in a month!

—-
Fun-A-Day is a game plan for activity and friendship in January. The guidelines are simple: create your own project and produce one piece of art (loosely defined) every day for the entire month. Then submit your 31 pieces in early February and be included in the (unjuried) show to be held at the Normal Gallery in Albuquerque.

Projects may vary from the pragmatic to the imaginative and abstract. You can do a painting-a-day, a postcard-a-day, a carbon transfer, a loaf of bread, a transcription of a conversation between children, or a photograph of a piece of origami that you leave in a public place.

Email us with brainstorms or feel free to post ideas to this page.

Fun-a-day was started and is perpetuated by the Art Clash Collective out of Philly. Have the fun guys.

Included here is a film made by a buddy of mine from over in Malawi. He and a group of students made this for the Malawi International Film Festival and it was subsequently banned in the country the day after its premiere. Western audiences will not likely note anything particularly racy or objectionable about the film, but it depicts a homosexual transvestite in a sympathetic light. Homosexuality, as you may have heard, isn’t very popular or viable in many parts of Africa right now, so shutting down screenings of this film down is just another, and relatively milder, example of the type of restriction, censorship, and in some cases, violence that is currently being cultivated in many parts of Africa against homosexuals.

All the best to my friend and his now fractured crew. Interesting to note that in this work of fiction, the protagonist, Lydia, is played by a straight Malawian male, which seems culturally a rather brave move on his part. Have a watch. Enjoy. Happy Holidays.
